The torc System

To develop a complete manufacturing system utilising torc material, extensive research took place following which Additive Layer Manufacturing (ALM) or 3D printing as it’s more commonly known was confirmed as the principle process.  In collaboration with Warwick Manufacturing Group (The University of Warwick) the testing of torc granules on a laboratory ‘direct feed’ system has proven to be fully viable.

Now up-scaling is required to accommodate the dimensions of AFOs utilising a multi-head system, adapted, integrated, and fully tested by WMG.

The unique properties of torc material will offer significant benefits within devices such as Ankle Foot Orthosis (AFO), Hip Spica, and Prosthetic Socket Liners, that will result in a positive impact on the lives of  infants, youngsters, and adults living with conditions such as cerebral palsy, hip dysplasia and lower limb amputation. These devices were identified by Orthopaedic Specialists as ones that would  benefit most from the unique properties of torc material, as follows:

Will print directly from scan, eliminating preliminary plaster casts, plastic sheet waste & significant reject levels.

Able to be re-shaped on the patient for the best fit and comfort.

Produce and fit in days as opposed to the current system which takes between 6 -12 weeks.

Fully re-usable materials

Its re-shapeable property will enable AFOs no longer required in the UK health industry to be re-used in developing countries.

Impact and flex resistant

Water resistant for showering or bathing (warm temperatures only)

Suitable for embedding safe heat source, sensors, and communication chips.

Anti-microbial formulations available for protection against infection.

torc Hip Spica

Safe and easy shaping to patient for best fit.

Can be refitted in an outpatient department or clinic as opposed to repeated visits to operating theatre.

Multi-zoned heat control for accessing specific areas that require examination or adjustment for growth.

Can be re-shaped multiple times.

Water resistant (warm temperatures only).

Impact cushioning to reduce effect of knocks.

Wash/wipe clean surfaces for good hygiene.

Anti-microbial formulations available for protection against infection.

torc Prosthetic Socket Liner

Safe and easy shaping for best fit with residual limb topography.

Can be re-shaped by patient thereby reducing need for visits to prosthetist/clinic
